Building customised pathways

Custom pathways are created and managed in Studio, Career Explorer’s Learning Management System (LMS).

Important Notes:

  1. Pathways created and published in Studio remain hidden from students until administrators manually enroll students via Career Explorer enrollment feature. You can safely construct, test, and update pathways in Studio without risk of unintended exposure to students.
  2. If you want to create the same pathway in two or more languages, you must create them as separate pathways.
  3. Verify that team members that will be creating custom content hold active Career Explorer licenses. To reassign administrator licenses or request additional ones, contact JobTeaser's Customer Experience team at support.careercenter@jobteaser.com.

Prepare course content inputs

Gather the following elements prior to start creating your pathway in Studio:

  • Pathway title: the official student-facing title
  • One-sentence objective: a concise summary of the main course goal.
  • 2–5 target skills/competencies or key learning outcomes for the pathway.
  • Course structure outline: drafted sequence of Sections, Sub-sections, and Units.
  • Proofread text content: finalized text copy and instructional notes.
  • YouTube video URLs: links for video components to embed.
  • Course thumbnail / banner image: visual asset for the pathway
  • Internal identifiers: unique course number and session codes

Log into Studio

  • Log into your JobTeaser Career Center back-office, go to the Career Explorer tab.
  • Click ‘Create a pathway’

You will be redirected to the Studio interface. Click ‘Sign in’

🔧 Troubleshooting Note: If you encounter connection issues or login loops, clear your browser’s cache and cookies. If sign-in fails, confirm with JobTeaser’s Customer Experience team (support.careercenter@jobteaser.com) that your email address is assigned to one of your institution’s 3 administrator licenses.

Please note that the Studio interface is available only in English, as it is a tool external to JobTeaser.

Overview of a pathway’s architecture

Studio organizes pathway content through a three-level structural hierarchy containing modular content blocks:

This is how the structure looks in Studio:

Best practices to structure your pathway:

Structure level Structural role Best practices for administrators
Section Top-level container Serves as the primary structural folder. Recommended: Name the section identically to your pathway title (e.g., "Succeeding in Your Internship Search").
Sub-section Thematic chapters The main chapter divisions forming the pathway structure (e.g., "Understanding the Market", "Building a great CV").
Unit Work session pages Individual lesson pages inside a sub-section. Each sub-section can hold one or multiple units.
Component Content elements Individual blocks added inside a unit (text paragraphs, YouTube video embeds, exercise links, quizzes).

Step 1: Create a new pathway

In Studio, custom pathways are authored under the core system name "Course".

  • On the Studio main dashboard, click + New Course.
  • Enter the course parameters:
    • Course name
    • Organization: your university name
    • Course number: enter a short, unique internal code (e.g., JT101 or CAREER-2026). This identifier tracks the course in admin reporting and analytics exports.
    • Course session: Enter a session, term, or cohort code (e.g., 2026-Quarter01 or Fall2026).
  • Click Create

Step 2: Add sections, sub-sections units and components

  • Click New Section and name it identically to your pathway title (e.g. Succeeding in Your Internship Search):

  • Click New Sub-section within the Section to create your first chapter (e.g. Understanding the market):

  • Under the sub-section, click New Unit
  • Enter a descriptive title for the unit page

  • Add components under Units

You can add a ‘text’ component, for example:

  • Inside the Unit page, click Text > Text.
  • Click Edit
  • Enter or paste your text. Format headings, bullet points, bold text, and embedded URLs using the rich text toolbar.
  • Click Save.

You can also add YouTube videos as components:

  • Inside the Unit page, click Video.
  • Click Edit on the added component.
  • Delete the placeholder (example) URL, and paste your full YouTube video link, and adjust display settings.
  • Click Save.

Now that you’ve mastered creating subsections, units, and components, you’re ready to replicate them to build your learning path.

Step 3: Embed ready-made career guidance modules (optional)

You can also integrate our ready-to-use career guidance modules into your custom pathways. Make sure to not re-use any modules that you have already enrolled your students in previously. Otherwise they would have to take the same module twice. Integration is as simple as adding a hyperlink.

  • First, open Career Explorer from the student view in a separate tab, and copy the URL of the module you want to integrate into your pathway.
  • Next, return to Studio, and create a dedicated Sub-section
  • Add a unit inside the sub-section: note that the unit title corresponds to the page title for the student, so give it a descriptive name such as “Start the interactive module”.
  • Then add an image or text component, click “Edit,” and type or paste your introductory text (for example: “To access this interactive module, click here”)
  • Click the “Link” icon, then paste the URL you copied earlier. Be sure to select the “Open in a new window” option so that the module opens in a new tab without closing the student’s main learning path.

Step 4: Publishing the pathway

Once you've finalized your pathway, you need to publish it to make it available to students. You also need to enroll students in the pathway so they can view and complete it. These two steps are mandatory as students will not be able to view and complete pathways if they are not published and if they have not been enrolled. We'll cover how to enroll them later in this tutorial.

Unit publishing: click Publish on individual Unit components to move them out of draft status:

Section Publishing: to publish your whole pathway—and to save time—publish all changes at once (instead of doing so for each unit).

At the top of the page, click “Content,” then “Outline.” Click the “Publish” icon. The “Publish” icon only appears when the section’s content is new or has been modified.

Step 5:  Configuring pathway parameters

Now that your pathway has been published, you need to configure its settings—an essential  and mandatory step, since some of these settings will be visible to students on the pathway’s overview page (pathway description, the skills to be acquired or expected outcomes, and the pathway image).

  • In Studio, click Settings > Schedule & Details from the top menu.
  • Scroll down slightly and set the Course Start Date (and optional End Date). To allow students to view and complete the pathway as soon as they are enrolled, simply set a start date earlier than today's date.
  • Then, select the language for your pathway (e.g., English, French, etc). If you want to create the same course in two or more languages, you must create them as separate pathways.
  • In the Course Short Description section, briefly explain the objective of your pathway.
  • In the “Course Overview” section, add the description, expected skills or outcomes.

🚨Please note that simply typing or copying and pasting your description is not enough. In this section, you must use the HTML template below. Here are the steps to follow:

  1. Copy and paste the template below:

<section class="about">

<h4>What is it about?</h4>

<p>WRITE YOUR COURSE DESCRIPTION HERE.</p>

</section>

‹section class="prerequisites">

<h4>By the end, you will be able to..</h4>

<u>

<i>HERE IS THE 1st SKILL ACQUIRED or EXPECTED OUTCOMES</li>

<|i>HERE IS THE 2nd SKILL ACQUIRED or EXPECTED OUTCOMES</li>

<|i>HERE IS THE 3rd SKILL ACQUIRED or EXPECTED OUTCOMES</li>

</u>

</section>

  1. Return to Studio, delete all text from the “Course Overview” section, and paste the HTML code you just copied.
  2. Next, replace the text in UPPERCASE with the information you want to add: COURSE DESCRIPTION, and the SKILLS TO BE ACQUIRED or EXPECTED OUTCOMES. Be sure not to modify the template’s code tags to preserve the formatting. You can, of course, delete an entire line (including the <li> and </li> code tags) to reduce the number of skills or expected outcomes. You can also duplicate lines to add more skills or expected outcomes.
  • Then, upload your pathway image. It must be less than 1 MB to be accepted.
  • Don’t forget to save your changes by clicking the orange button that appears at the bottom of your screen every time you make a change.

Step 6: Previewing content as a student

The final adjustments to your pathway are now complete. You can now view it as a student.

  • Click “Content,” then “Outline,” and finally “View live.”
  • Check the page order, formatting, videos, and all links.

Archiving & hiding a pathway

Administrators can archive or hide custom pathways in Studio to prevent new enrollments. Below is the archiving procedure:

  1. Select the course you wish to archive or hide.
  2. In the top navigation bar, click Settings > Schedule & Details and adjust course visibility dates:
    • End Date: Setting the course end date to a past date prevents new student enrollments while preserving historical data.
    • Start Date: Alternatively, pushing the start date far into the future renders the course inaccessible to learners until that date.
  3. Under Content, click the three dots to the right of the section, then click “Configure”

Then click Hide from learners

⚠️ Important notes:

  • Archiving a pathway prevents new students from enrolling, but previously enrolled students can typically still access completed pathway content.
  • To completely restrict access for all users, you must manually un-enroll previously registered students via the enrollment management back-office in addition to updating pathway settings.
